Sports tournament organized by the association in Vienna
Sports play a vital social role in every society, serving as a powerful means of social, cultural, and communicative development. Sports and athletic competitions promote teamwork, responsibility, social skills, cultural understanding, solidarity, and physical and mental health. They help build bridges between communities and foster happiness, cooperation, and peace.
Sports associations also play a key role in the social integration of refugees and migrants. Sports help them find their place in Austrian society by promoting respect, patience, and teamwork between people of different backgrounds. For many, participation in sports improves their overall quality of life and mental well-being.
Anxiety and depression are among the most common mental health problems in modern societies. Research shows that regular exercise can significantly reduce these conditions and boost self-confidence. Therefore, supporting sports activities at both the individual and social level is crucial for improving community health.
Among various age groups, teenagers and young adults are particularly vulnerable to physical and mental challenges. By engaging them in purposeful activities, we can channel their energy towards positive development and prevent potential social problems.
Katib Cultural and Sports Association’s Contributions to Sports Development:
1. Participation in European and International Karate Competitions
Our young Afghan athletes proudly represented our community in the European Karate Championship held in Salzburg on June 24–25, 2017, competing against 20 European countries. They won bronze medals, bringing pride to Afghanistan and our association.
Later, in the 17th “Vienna International Championship” (September 23, 2017), our team won 3 gold and 2 silver medals among 11 European nations. Afghan athletes from Austria, Sweden, Germany, and Belgium made us proud once again by achieving first place as a team.
2. Football Tournaments and Youth Talent Identification
The association organized six football and futsal tournaments between 2017 and 2019 — three winter and three summer tournaments. Around 20 teams from across Austria participated in each event.
Guests included Austrian officials, representatives of the Afghan Embassy, the head of Afghanistan’s Futsal Federation, and many community leaders.
Alongside sports competitions, there were music shows, children’s games, cultural exhibitions, and Afghan traditional dress presentations. Each year, 300–500 participants attended, making it a vibrant celebration of community and sportsmanship.
At the end of each tournament, cash prizes and awards were given to the top teams and outstanding players. Katib Association continues to improve the quality and organization of these tournaments every year.
